After many years using my SD gimmeshelter I decided I was ready to add a little weight in trade for a lot more room (comfort). After a few nights out I am super happy with my choice. NOTE I am using this tent as a one man tent. I am 6'2 and can fit just fine with my pack inside.
Super easy freestanding setup. Did well in the wind when staked out. Love the metal holders for the pole tips, so much better than grommets. ventilation is good. Rained hard two nights ago and no problems. I think I will be able to partially open the fly when it is hot and rainy without letting rain in. Some water does run in when opening the fly after rain shower but not too bad. Had no condensation issues at all. Now I am just hoping this tent lasts as long as my last SD tent. Before going on a four day backpacking trip to Los Padres National Forest, I wanted to get a lightweight tent that could accommodate me and my buddy, last me for a few years at least, and not burn a huge hole in my pocket. I was looking around at tons of tents in the 300+ dollar range, all around 5lbs, and decided it may be best to look in the secondhand market. A craigslist add led me to look at sierra designs tents (I think it was a Flashlight UL 2), but after more research I learned there were some moisture buildup issues with that particular model. I checked out the Sierra Designs website and learned about the new Summer Moon 2, and was stoked to see how light it was. After a week of more careful deliberation, I decided it was the best bang for my buck, and purchased it.
I didn't get a shipping confirmation the next day, so I called and asked how long it would take to arrive (They were changing warehouses at the time so shipping times may have been longer). A really nice young woman immediately picked up the phone and knew the answer to my question. Sierra Designs if you're reading this, A+ for your customer support.
The tent came a few days later, and I opened it up and set it up immediately in my living room. The tent poles are made of light, sturdy aluminum, and click together with a (very satisfying) snap. the tent body is very light but seemingly tough, and the mesh is usual high quality mesh. Everything on the tent feels well designed and engineered, and the setup takes about two minutes in the field (add anther two to setup the rain-fly).
After the trip, I can say this tent lived up to my highest expectations and more. It fit my buddy and I snugly, we're both about 6'3 and 210lbs, which more than surprised me. When alone in the tent there was more than enough room for myself, and some of my gear (Maybe not a whole pack though). The second and third night, with the rain-fly up, there was no moisture buildup anywhere and it got down to about 40 that morning (with the vents properly staked out). Also, the night glow feature is very handy.
The only thing I could complain about is the headroom due to the way the tent is structured, but I understood that could be an issue when I purchased it. I can comfortably sit in the center of the tent, but it gets a little low near the sides. Not a fatal flaw. It would also be rad if it came with a ground tarp!
In conclusion, I'm very happy with this purchase, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality, lightweight, and affordable tent.
