I've got both the Elite and the original Cagoule. The original is the best lightweight raingear I have ever owned. Super light weight but great ventilating coverage for the back country. The Elite is a bit heavier and bulkier. I got it for football games since it has snaps and is a bit thicker. Surprisingly it is not that much bigger than the original stuffed down. I recently carried both in my small fanny pack, one for my wife (since her usual gear is heavier and we were flying in to Colorado. Good thing. Rained 4 times and hailed twice in 8 hours hiking to Booth Lake in Vale. Cant understand why people don't buy these like hotcakes. Really innovative design, breathable, and I love the butt coverage. I've been a backpacker for over 40 years. Believe me this is all you need for rain coverage. Unknown on Sep 10th 2018
Cool concept but..... awkward to get on as a pull-over and I felt like I was going to rip it. I got a medium and found it was way to tight of a fit (then again I'm 5'11, broad shoulders, ~175 lbs.). The fit was tight in the shoulders/arm pits and I'm not sure the gill venting could work very well as such.
The material is thin and lightweight, and with that, less durable.
Wish I could try a size Large and actually use the jacket but I purchased through a site that didn't allow returns/exchange for credit. Mike on May 2nd 2018
I have used my cagoule on several long PCT sections hikes including a winter snowing overnighter, a rainy PNW coat weekender and love it.
It breathes and ventilates so well that I can stride uphill now without steaming up anymore. while still getting all around rain protection. It's basically the sweet spot between a poncho or jacket where you neither steam up or have things flapping around your ears while getting wet arms.
At this point I'm never going back to steamy jacket and pants. Highly recommended system. Alex on Apr 4th 2018
Took this on a high route through the front range in Colorado last summer, and it wetted out within 10 mins of first use. Maybe I got a lemon, but very disappointing. Unknown on Feb 25th 2018
This is an awesome product. My friend and I just completed our thru-hike of the Colorado Trail on July 31. We had 12 days of rain out of 33 days on the trail. With the Elite Cagoule we never got wet, even for extended periods of time hiking in the rain over multiple days (7 straight days of rain between North Pass and Silverton). This jacket is easy to put on (and take off) and protected us from wind, rain, sleet and hail. I also used it on cold mornings to take the chill off. The length in back also provided protection when sitting on wet logs or rocks during breaks from hiking. The flap in front provides great accessibility to pant pockets as well as breathability. You can decide whether or not to use the snaps on the flap in order to let more air in from the sides. The hood is light enough that I was able to wear it underneath my trekking hat, which is a wide-brimmed outback type hat. That was an unexpected bonus. All in all, I was very happy to have this as part of my rain gear and consider it to be one of the success factors for our thru-hike. I also used the chaps and have written a review for them as well.
