Let's start with the good: the small size of this jacket fits my 5'9" & 136# frame like a glove, and has the best sleeve design I've ever encountered (37" sleeves with incredible thumb holes that seal out the wind when I'm not using them. The hood fits great with no hat, and it fits great with two hats, the back length could be an inch or two longer, but that just means I need to tug down the hem every now and again. There is room to layer my base and an R1 fleece, but not much more than that. The jacket is stylish, comfortable, and rates 5/5 stars... IF THEY'D FIX THE DOWN.
Now on to the bad part: this jacket has the absolute worst down distribution I've ever seen in my life. When I received it, every baffle had its down packed into a small clump in the middle, like the manufacturers had just taken some down and rolled it into a ball before poking it into the baffle and leaving it. I was able to distribute the down in the larger baffles in the body and hood, but the sleeves are much more difficult and I've only gotten them to the point where half of each tube is filled, and the other half is almost completely empty. Furthermore, some baffles are very nicely overstuffed while others are badly underfilled. Unfortunately, my roommate threw away the tags for my coat, and the representative I talked to told me I CANNOT RETURN IT WITHOUT ALL OF THE TAGS.
In conclusion, I absolutely do not recommend this jacket due to terrible filling practices by the manufacturer. However, if you have a chance to go to a store and look at it in person, you can choose a jacket that's filled correctly; this would mitigate the issue, and make it a worthwhile purchase. If you choose to buy it online, DO NOT let the packaging out of your sight until you've thoroughly checked out the product. Riah on Apr 24th 2017
Very nice sew through design. Very warm and fits well. I had the big brother of this jacket the dry down parka but it was too much jacket for Florida. So I bought the Hoody and it is great. Nice hood and quality construction. Unknown on Mar 13th 2017
I have looked long and hard for a hoody like this. It seemed like Sierra Designs read my mind and custom built this jacket for me. Superlight weight Dri-Tech down, DWR finish, ultra-compact - Everything an ounce counter wants. The thumb holes and hood design are happy bonuses, the DWR held up to light, intermittent rain like a champ, and I did not overheat in late September while hiking with it on. As a matter of fact, it seems to be pretty temperature regulating! The two real surprises for me were the finish and wash-ability. I hate shiny jackets, and the black hoody I got has a very low sheen. Love that! But I was admittedly scared when I first washed this jacket. There are lots of promises out there regarding care for down items, and I am very pleased to say that this jacket can be washed, according to the instructions, at home with fantastic results. Amazing product! Nailed it, Sierra Designs!! Duane Buchholz on Jan 8th 2017
The most feature rich lightweight down jacket on the market, without being gimmicky. Some people may not like that the waist does not have a draw string but from my experience in condition that you would want a draw string you wouldn't be wearing this alone but under a soft or hard shell that would have one making a draw string on this jacket redundant and an annoyance. The thumb loops and drawstring free hood are great additions as well. I'm 5'8" 165 athletic build and I would have to say the sizing is a little strange. I ordered a small and medium because I was in-between sizes. The small fit me perfectly everywhere except in the chest and shoulders, and I do no have large shoulder pec's or lat's. The hood size, waist, stomach area, arm length and overall length of the small fit perfect but chest area was too tight for comfort. From my experience all of sierra designs sizing is slightly off from industry norms, it seems like their sizing is designed around a runners body. The medium is great just a little baggier in the arms and waist area. Bren on May 26th 2016
