Choosing a Tent

We design tents for the variety of weather conditions encountered during different seasons of the year, as well as the activities in which you may participate during these seasons. We classify our tents in six categories, based on the seasons and use for which each tent is designed. Be sure that the tent you choose meets or exceeds the conditions that you expect to encounter. And don't forget to purchase a tent footprint to protect your tent's floor.

Ultralight Tents
Ultralight is the current mantra with backpackers, climbers and adventurers. For 2007 we present our Asp series of tents. The Asp is the "Best of Adventure Gear" award winner from National Geographic Adventure Magazine. Designed with Reverse Combi and our Quick Pitch Swivel Hub technology and two doors, both the Asp and Asp 3 will become a coveted friend in the backcountry. Our Baku tents are an innovative shelter that's a hybrid of single- and double-wall construction. These tents will satisfy those who want the ease of pitching a tent without a fly.

Our Ultralight tents are designed for these activities:
  • Spring, Summer and Fall Backpacking
  • Fastpacking
  • Kayaking
  • Canoeing

Three-Season Tents
Most people use their three-season tents for great adventure. With that in mind, Sierra Designs' tent line-up boasts tried-and-true favorites like the Meteor Light and newer designs like our Tengu Series. Reverse Combi Technology is the future and we have designed numerous tents with this technically advanced invention: Reverse Combi, Antares, Tengu and Tengu 3. Because of this technology there is a greater deal of strength in the pole structure and more livable space. Sierra Designs' three-season tents are the go-to shelters for backpackers, car campers, weekend warriors or anyone looking for quality and reliability from a trusted brand.

Four-Season Tents
When hunkered down in a four-season tent, you want the most weatherproofness as well as the most comfortable shelter possible. This season, you'll find just that in our expanded range of four-season tents, some featuring Reverse Combi Technology. More usable interior living space means more comfort - and our tents have always been the most reliable, durable ones out there. These tents are for serious adventures in the most hostile environments. Sierra Designs wind-tunnel tests our burliest tents like the Hercules Assault V.2 and Stretch Dome. They regularly withstand winds over 60 mph and gusts to even 100 mph. Our single-wall Hercules Assault V.2 is also one of the quietest tents in a windstorm - something you will appreciate the first time you are pinned down when the weather goes south. Our Omega and Alpha, convertible tents, feature roll-back ceiling/wall panels and Removable Stash Doors for more breathability in warmer conditions, too.

Our Four-Season Tents are designed for these activities:
  • Backcountry Ski Touring
  • Winter Mountaineering
  • Expedition Climbing
  • Mountaineering
  • 4-Season Camping

See how the Hercules performs in Wind Tunnel testing and note that it's still standing strong at 100 mph. Shown from 80 to 100 mph. This tent was tested without its fly or guy-outs. With a fly and proper guy-outs the Hercules can withstand even higher windspeeds.

Origami Tarps
Our performance tarps represent a new frontier in lightweight and function. Based around a fundamental design of five equilateral triangles, they're strong, versatile and reliable. The Origami 2 and Origami 4 Tarps come with an adjustable DAC pole that allows pitching it taller for more headroom, or lower for a wider footprint. Multiple guy-out points allow customization with trekking poles. A zippered panel provides in-out access.

Our Origami Tarps are designed for these activities:
  • Family Events
  • Picnics
  • Beach Vacations
  • Ultralight Backpacking
  • FastPacking
