LOUISVILLE, COLO. (January 18, 2007) - Sierra Designs, an authentic technical leader in developing innovative outdoor products including tents, sleeping bags and clothing for "people in the know", announced today that it has purchased renewable energy certificates to offset 100 percent of the power used at the company's American headquarters and warehouse with wind energy.
"Our business practice and path for 2007 and beyond illustrates our commitment to the environment and the community with the use of sustainable practices, partnerships and product innovations," said Paul Gagner president of Sierra Designs. With this new joint venture and the use of renewable energy at our headquarters, we continue to build upon our Green Effect program for years to come."
Environmental Benefit:
This commitment to renewable energy prevents 102,240 pounds of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) from entering the earth's atmosphere, equivalent to planting 38 acres of trees or removing 10 cars from the road each year.
What is a Renewable Energy Certificate?
By purchasing RECs, Sierra Designs ensures an amount of clean energy equal to their electricity use is delivered to the electricity grid. This purchase will displace the generation of polluting coal and natural gas electricity throughout the power system and reduce emissions into the atmosphere. This occurs because when more renewable energy is delivered to the power grid, the need for coal or other brown sources of power declines and such facilities can be decommissioned. The RECs purchased by Sierra Designs are Green-e(r) certified which ensures they meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards established by the Center for Resource Solutions. What is the EPA Green Power Partnership?
EPA's Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that seeks to increase the use of clean, renewable energy sources among leading U.S. organizations. Partners in the program purchase green power in an amount that must meet or exceed the EPA benchmarks and in return receive EPA technical assistance and recognition. EPA's Green Power Partnership currently has more than 600 Partners, including Fortune 500 companies, states, federal agencies, trade associations and universities.
What is Green-e(r)?
Launched in 1997, The Green-e Renewable Energy Certification Program is the leading voluntary certification and verification program that sets standards for renewable electricity-based products in three markets for renewable energy: restructured, regulated, and tradable renewable certificates.
