Adventure Story Contest :: Karin Engstrom :: Desert Storm Adventure
|
The Outdoor Education POST at Garfield HS is a unique program. It is student led. Students who want to be a staff member to run trips must take Survival, Advanced Survival and Mountaineers First Aid (MOFA). Desert School is for ninth grade only. We take over 120 9th grade students and 40-50 staff members on this 2 session outdoor experience the week before Memorial Day. Students lead biology and geology hikes, teach kayaking and rock climbing during the camper's 5 days. Staff members prepare the meals and run the whole operation! It is an amazing experience for any adult to share! I've gone on many Desert Schools. This year, I was the teacher and a POST alum and Garfield Grad, Michael Shope, was our advisor. I came to the website to find out how I could replace one of my tent poles since it bent. I can still set up the tent but it bulges! It is one awesome piece of equipment. The other tent on the hill had all its poles break! (Marmot) Click here to see how Sierra Designs was used by Karin Engstrom and other people in the know. |
